MORE THAN A SILHOUETTE

The basket started out as a nest.

The Easter rabbit came over with German settlers in the 1700s and put down roots in Pennsylvania. In the old country he was the Osterhase — a hare, not a rabbit — and the arrangement was this: children built him a nest. Caps and bonnets turned upside down, tucked into the barn or a quiet corner of the garden, so that if they had been good he would come in the night and lay colored eggs in it.

The nest became a basket somewhere along the way. Same idea. Same hoping.

Both are on this branch — the hare sitting up, the basket with its bow, and an egg beside them cut through with hearts.

The eggs themselves came from a practical place. In the old fasting rules eggs were off the table through Lent, and hens kept laying regardless. By the end of forty days a household had more eggs than it knew what to do with, and they went to the table on Easter morning, boiled and colored. Thrift first, tradition after.

And the day moves. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, which slides it anywhere from the twenty-second of March to the twenty-fifth of April. It is one of the last holidays we still let the moon decide.

Hang it out when the crocus comes up and leave it a while.

Also Perfect For

  • An Easter gift that lasts longer than the basket candy
  • Spring yard and garden decorating, March through May
  • Gifts for Mom or Grandma, and a first Easter in a new home
  • Egg hunts — hang it where the hunt starts
  • Garden lovers and anyone who keeps rabbits

Where It Looks Best

Set it where the low sun gets behind it — the tree at the front walk, the porch post, over the door.

Details

  • Design: A hare, a basket with a bow, and an egg cut with hearts, hung from a cut steel branch
  • Material: 1/8-inch steel
  • Finish: Choose Raw Steel (arrives bare, rusts naturally outdoors) or Black Powder Coat
  • Made in Texas: Laser cut from American steel in our family-owned shop

How to Set It

1. Pick a tree trunk, or a sturdy wooden post — the side facing the walk or the window.
2. Hold the spike at a slight downward angle against the wood, pendants hanging free.
3. Tap the end of the branch with a hammer or mallet (a scrap of wood between protects the steel) until the piece holds firm.
No drilling, no screws, no other tools.

The Finish

Pick your finish from the Finish menu on this listing.

Raw Steel (Rusts Naturally): Your piece arrives as bare, raw steel — a clean steel gray. Outdoors, rain and dew turn it a warm rust brown, usually over the first few weeks, and the color keeps deepening with the weather. There is no paint or coating, so there is nothing to peel, fade or touch up. While the rust is forming, rust-colored runoff can mark pale stone, concrete or siding directly below it, so set it over wood, soil or mulch. Prefer the bare steel look? Keep it indoors or out of the rain.

Black Powder Coat: the same steel piece, powder coated in black. It arrives black rather than bare, does not develop the rust patina, and leaves no rust runoff, so it can go over pale stone, concrete or siding. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth. If it ever gets chipped, a dab of black exterior metal paint touches it up.
